An Inside Look at Merly’s Internship Experience

Discover Merly’s Journey at WAYS for Life.

We are excited to share a recent interview with Merly, who joined us as an intern at WAYS for Life. Merly’s time here was filled with memorable experiences and insights that highlight the essence of our organization. Here’s a glimpse into her journey:

1. What was your favorite moment at WAYS for Life?

I think graduation was such an amazing experience for me to have. I loved every minute of it, from the preparation to the end of the event. I understood something important that day about social work while carrying one of the member’s little nephews up the stairs so he could see her graduating: there are so many different ways to serve others that you will always have an opportunity to do so.

2. What surprised you about the organization once you started working day-to-day with the staff, volunteers, and members?

I was impressed with how much care every person in WAYS gives to their members. They go far and beyond to help people, demonstrated by the different processes and quality of work everyone puts into serving the community.

3. What was your favorite lunch you had?

It must have been one of the first lunches I had at WAYS, where everyone sat at the big table and talked about their gardens and their families. I heard people laughing and sharing their stories, and it felt like a big family gathering on Thanksgiving, sharing food and enjoying everyone’s company like old friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time. At that moment, I felt like I belonged at WAYS.

4. Share a special moment you had with a member.

It was my last day at WAYS, and Kiley and I sat with one of our members who was having a hard time. I had the opportunity to listen to his preoccupations and fears. At some point in our conversation, he asked me for my opinion on his situation, and I looked him in the eyes and told him: You can do this, you know you can, I know you can, and everyone here knows it too. He cried, and I felt it was an amazing moment when we both helped each other.

5. Overall, how was your experience interning here?

My experience at WAYS was filled with good times and wonderful people. The work environment in this organization is friendly, and I have made good friends. I also discovered parts of myself I did not know before, bringing light to my doubts about my career path.

6. What did you learn from this experience/ any takeaways?

I learned I can serve people in ways I did not imagine could make a difference. I learned that exceptional people work in this organization and that there is always space for more help. I am grateful for my time at WAYS and am more than happy to return and spend time there serving as I can.

Merly’s reflections offer a beautiful snapshot of the meaningful work and community spirit at WAYS for Life. We’re grateful for her time with us and to be able to share her story.
